What is a Rubik’s cube timer

A Rubik’s cube timer mat is useful when practicing with your Rubik’s cube to set new records. Being able to keep exact track of how fast you are with a speedcube gives you a good indication of whether you’re improving and whether you have a chance at an official tournament. You can also compare the results of your new techniques to find your fastest method.

Both are suitable for measuring your solving times to the nearest thousandth of a second. Your Rubik’s cube solving time is measured by sensors that detect when you place or remove your hands. The YJ Timer has a dark design, with matte black as its main color and blue accents. This model can also be combined with a speedcube mat from YuXin, Qiyi or Speedstacks. The YuXin Cube Timer V2 is bright green with yellow accents.

Why use a Rubik’s Cube timer mat?

You can solve a speedcube without a cube timer, doing your best to finish as quickly as possible. But how do you know whether you can solve the puzzle in a really short time? And whether you're faster than you were the week before? You can try using a stopwatch on your mobile phone, but you might lose a few seconds setting up your smartphone, or miss the button when you finish one of your fastest solves. That means you won't get a good picture of your progress. In that case, you'll need to be able to measure how fast you can solve a Rubik’s cube down to the millisecond, in a stress-free and reliable way. A speedcube timer does all of that for you.

The timing is precise because a cube timer is not only highly accurate, but also eliminates a lot of distractions. All you have to do is set your speedcube in front of you, place your hands on the sensors and wait for the red light to turn green. Then you can take your hands off the sensors and quickly grab the cube. The timer starts automatically when you lift your hands off the Rubik’s cube timer. Have you solved the puzzle? Then place both hands back on the sensor pads, and the timer will stop automatically. With a handy storage function, you can save your best times on the cube timer so you can see exactly whether you’ve improved.

How does a speedcube timer work?

The On/Off button activates the speedcube timer and, in most cases, displays your most recent time on the dashboard in the middle. To retrieve previously saved times or save new ones, you can browse the history and make changes using the Cycle and Save buttons. You can also reset your most recent time with the Reset button to start with a clean slate. The Reset button also activates the sensors, allowing you to place your hands on the pads. An automatic detection system then registers when you’re ready for a new round by changing a red light to green. Depending on the model, the Rubik’s cube timer mat may also have a port that lets you display times on an external display or computer instead of on the dashboard. Cables for making this connection are not included with the device. Finally, most cube timers are powered by two AAA batteries.
