Model kits

What is model building?

Model building involves making scale models of various objects. This means creating a miniature replica of a car, boat, airplane, shop, house, animal or fictional character from a film. It’s a hobby where you use a model kit to recreate your favorite objects and vehicles down to the smallest detail.

It's easy to become a model builder. Not all model kits require tools or glue. At Speedcube, we have a large selection, with plenty to choose from for both children and adults.

Why is model building so popular?

The hobby’s approachable nature appeals to many people. Beginners can get off to a good start, since the different brands offer model kits at every difficulty level. You just need to choose one that suits your skill level. You can judge this by the number of parts, the building process, the material and the size of the parts. If you need help choosing a suitable model kit, you can contact us.

Model building is also a fun way to keep yourself busy. It takes quite a few hours to assemble large models. Afterwards, you can give one a nice spot in your room, in one of the display cases.

Another reason many people enjoy model building is that it gives you a chance to express your creativity. You don’t have to follow the instructions. You can create your own designs using parts from different model kits. You can also create a diorama and come up with your own color scheme for when you paint it.

What types of kits are available?

There are many different types of model kits. Wood, plastic, metal model kits and even stone are all materials used in this hobby. Each material has its own unique way of being used in your project. Wood gives a distinctive look, while metal is well suited to vehicles. Plastic model kits offer a good balance between quality and cost.

One of the most important features is the scale. A model’s scale tells you how much detail it will have. It can also help you tell whether a kit is easy or difficult, along with the number of parts. Wooden model kits are often suitable for beginners.

In model building, you can find kits that need to be glued, screwed or soldered, as well as parts that simply snap together. Once finished, some models can make sounds or light up. Others have moving parts that only start moving once the project is complete. However, the most common type of model you'll come across is a static one.
